Pernicious anaemia is a type of megaloblastic anaemia caused by a deficiency of vitamin B12. The condition occurs when the body is unable to absorb vitamin B12 from the gastrointestinal tract. This can occur due to a deficiency of intrinsic factor, a protein secreted by the stomach that is necessary for the absorption of vitamin B12.
