Fibromax is a test that is used to assess the risk of fibrosis (or scarring) in the liver. Fibrosis is a common complication of chronic liver disease, and it can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. The test is a non-invasive method that measures the levels of specific biomarkers in the blood, which can indicate the presence and severity of liver fibrosis. These biomarkers are produced by the liver when it is damaged and attempts to repair itself.

The Fibromax test assesses the fibrosis activity by evaluating biochemicals like SGPT, SGOT, Triglycerides, Cholesterol, FBS, Bilirubin, Alpha 2 macroglobulin, Haptoglobulin, Apo A1, GGT and determines the cause of fibrosis. It can distinguish between steatohepatitis – alcoholic or nonalcoholic.

Alcoholic steatohepatitis (ASH) is a type of liver disease that occurs in people who drink excessive amounts of alcohol. The liver becomes inflamed and filled with fat, leading to liver damage and scarring (cirrhosis).

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is a type of liver disease that occurs in people who do not drink excessive amounts of alcohol. Instead, it is characterized by the buildup of fat in the liver (steatosis), along with inflammation and liver cell damage. This can lead to cirrhosis. It is more common in individuals with risk factors such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and high triglycerides levels.

FAQ’s

The Fibromax test is done to evaluate the health of the liver and detect any problems. They can be used to:

  • Assess the risk of fibrosis (or scarring) in the liver
  • Identify the stage of fibrosis
  • Determine if a patient has advanced liver disease
  • Monitor the progression of the disease

You should get the Fibromax test done if you observe the following symptoms:

    • Abdominal pain
    • Jaundice
    • Confusion

The Fibromax test is a non-invasive method that measures the levels of specific biomarkers in the blood, which can indicate the presence and severity of liver fibrosis (or scarring) of the liver. The severity of the fibrosis is usually graded as mild, moderate, or severe. Knowing the stage of fibrosis is important as it determines the treatment plan and the need for follow up

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

If a Fibromax test is positive, it may indicate the presence of fibrosis (scarring) in the liver. Fibrosis is the formation of excessive fibrous connective tissue in an organ or tissue as a reparative response to injury or disease and is the early stage of liver scarring. In the case of the liver, fibrosis can be caused by a number of different factors, including viral hepatitis, alcohol consumption, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and certain medications.
