Autoimmune liver disease refers to a group of disorders in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the liver. This results in inflammation and damage to the liver cells, leading to various degrees of liver injury. There are several types of autoimmune liver disease, the most common types are:

  • Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH): It is characterized by inflammation and destruction of liver cells, resulting in cirrhosis, jaundice, fatigue, abdominal pain and itchy skin.
  • Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC): it is a chronic disease characterized by inflammation and damage of the small bile ducts within the liver. This results in the obstruction of bile flow and eventually leads to cirrhosis, jaundice and itching.
  • Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC): It is characterized by inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts, both inside and outside the liver, leading to bile duct obstruction, which can result in cirrhosis, jaundice, and itching.

FAQ’s

  • An autoimmune liver disease profile-3 is typically ordered when an autoimmune liver disease, such as autoimmune hepatitis or primary biliary cirrhosis is suspected.
  • The autoimmune liver disease profile-3 is a group of blood tests that can help diagnose and monitor the progression of these conditions.
  • The autoimmune liver disease profile-3 is used to detect the presence of specific antibodies that are associated with autoimmune liver disease.

You should get the Autoimmune Liver Disease Profile -3 done if you observe the following symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Jaundice
  • Itchy skin
  • Fatigue
  • Patient Preparation: 12-14 hrs fasting required

Total Tests Included: 3 (ASMA, LKM1, ANA)

The Autoimmune Liver Disease Profile -3 measures the autoantibodies antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-smooth muscle antibody (ASMA; also called anti-actin antibody), and liver-kidney microsomal antibody type 1 (LKM-1).

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

ASMA, LKM1, and ANA are all antibodies that can be found in the blood of individuals with autoimmune liver disease.

  • A positive test for anti-smooth muscle antibodies (ASMA) suggests an autoimmune liver disease such as primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).
  • Liver-kidney microsomal antibodies (LKM) are antibodies directed against enzymes found in the liver and kidney. A positive LKM1 test suggests autoimmune hepatitis (AIH)

Anti-nuclear antibody (ANA) is a general marker for autoimmune disorders, as ANA can be found in a variety of autoimmune diseases including autoimmune liver disease. However, a positive ANA test alone is not specific for autoimmune liver disease, as ANA is found in many different autoimmune diseases
