- Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) detects hypersensitivity to Aspergillus fumigatus that occurs in patients with asthma or cystic fibrosis by measuring Total IgE, Aspergillus fumigatus (Specific IgG), and Aspergillus fumigatus (Specific IgE).
- This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.
When the ABPA test is positive, and the patient shows the presence of predisposing conditions like asthma or cystic fibrosis, it is indicative of hypersensitivity to Aspergillus fumigatus species. A negative result indicates that the symptoms are not due to Aspergillus fumigatus and other differential diagnoses must be considered.
