HBV Immunity Profile measures several markers in the blood that show whether you are infected with the hepatitis B virus. These markers include surface antigen, core antibody, and surface antibody.
- To detect whether you have been exposed to the hepatitis B virus
- To evaluate the effectiveness of previous or ongoing treatment for hepatitis B
- To determine whether you need to get vaccinated against hepatitis B
- To assess your risk of developing liver cancer or other liver diseases
Your doctor may recommend this test if you
- have symptoms of acute or chronic liver disease, such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or jaundice,
- have risk factors for hepatitis B, such as unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles or syringes with an infected person, or being born to a mother with hepatitis B, or
- want to determine your immune status and whether you need to get vaccinated against hepatitis B.
Abnormal results may indicate acute or chronic hepatitis B infection, past exposure to the virus, the presence of antibodies from vaccination or treatment, or false-positive results.
